Nephos Desk

Bleached oak with nothing on the surface but grain. Designed by Nersi Nasseri, built to order in our Brooklyn workshop.

Nephos Desk

Taking things off the desk

Nephos is Greek for cloud, and the name is about weight rather than shape. Nersi Nasseri drew this desk by removing: no visible hardware on the working surface, no applied detail, no contrast band at the edge. What is left is a plane of bleached oak and the structure holding it up.

Bleaching the oak does specific work on this piece. It pulls the yellow out and lightens the field without hiding the grain, so the figure reads as texture instead of pattern. Against a white wall the top nearly disappears and you notice the line of the edge. Against a dark floor the desk becomes the lightest thing in the room.

A desk is a surface you look at for hours. That was the design constraint, and it is why nothing on this one asks for attention.

Size, species and finish

Every Nephos is made to order, so the top is cut to the desk you actually need rather than a catalogue size. Bleached oak is the original, walnut gives you the opposite reading in the same form, and ash sits between them. Finish runs from a matte hardwax oil that stays close to the raw wood to a harder sealed surface for heavier daily use.
