Live Edge Furniture
Live edge furniture is one of SENTIENT’s most recognized specialties. We preserve the natural contour of the tree, creating pieces that celebrate the wood’s organic form rather than imposing a shape onto it. Every slab is hand-selected, and no two pieces are alike. What is live edge furniture?
Live edge furniture preserves the natural outer contour of the tree slab rather than cutting it into a straight, uniform shape. The result is a surface where one or both edges follow the organic line of the tree’s growth. Every curve, knot, and grain pattern is genuinely one of a kind. SENTIENT has built live edge pieces for private residences, hotel lobbies, corporate boardrooms, and restaurants. The natural form creates furniture that can’t be mass-produced or replicated, which is why it has become one of our most requested styles.
How does SENTIENT select live edge slabs?
SENTIENT sources live edge slabs from family-owned mills in Pennsylvania, less than 500 miles from our Brooklyn workshop. Every slab is inspected in person before purchase. We look for exceptional grain figure, stable structure, and natural edges with enough character to define the finished piece. Starting slabs should be at least 3 inches thick to accommodate the changes that happen during the drying process. We air-dry slabs for up to 18 months, then kiln-dry for a final 3 months. This slow, deliberate process ensures the wood is stable and will perform for generations.
What wood species are available for live edge tables?
SENTIENT works primarily with American black walnut, white oak, hard maple, and cherry for live edge pieces. Walnut is the most popular choice for its deep chocolate heartwood and cream sapwood ring. White oak offers durability with a subtle olive cast. Maple provides a lighter, contemporary look with occasional curly or quilted figure. We also work with spalted maple, ambrosia maple, and claro walnut for clients seeking distinctive grain patterns. For outdoor live edge pieces, we use teak and ipe. Learn more about our wood species.
What sizes are available for live edge tables?
SENTIENT live edge tables are fully custom. Single slab tables typically range from 70 to 168 inches long and 30 to 60 inches wide, depending on the slab. For wider tables, we use bookmatched slabs, where two slabs from the same tree are joined symmetrically. Solid wood boards can also be added between slabs for additional width. We build everything from intimate four-person dining tables to 16-foot communal designs for restaurants and hotels. Measurements can be adjusted to fit specific architectural requirements. Tell us your space dimensions and we’ll recommend the right proportions.
What is a bookmatched live edge table?
A bookmatched table uses two slabs cut sequentially from the same tree, opened like a book so the grain patterns mirror each other. The result is a wider tabletop with a continuous, symmetrical grain that gives the impression of a single monumental piece. SENTIENT uses bookmatching when a client needs a table wider than a single slab can provide, or when the mirrored grain pattern is the desired aesthetic. The join is polished to perfection, and the natural live edges remain on both outer sides of the table.
What is a river table and does SENTIENT build them?
Yes. A river table features two live edge slabs separated by a channel of colored epoxy resin, creating the illusion of a river flowing through the wood. SENTIENT builds custom river tables with full control over wood species, resin color, and design. We offer options including turquoise, black, blue, green, and custom color resin, with or without metallic effects, gradients, or embedded objects. We can even embed personal artifacts or sentimental items into the resin. We also build reverse river tables, where the live edge slab sits in the center with resin on both sides, and waterfall designs where the resin cascades down the table legs. See our live edge collection.
What base options are available for live edge tables?
SENTIENT designs and fabricates custom bases in our in-house metal shop. Options include steel, brass, bronze, and blackened steel in styles such as V-shaped, wishbone, frame, trapezoid, and pedestal. We also build solid wood bases for clients who prefer an all-wood design. Every base is engineered to support the specific weight and dimensions of the slab it carries. The base should complement the wood, not compete with it, and our design team will recommend proportions and finishes based on the slab you’ve selected.
What finishes does SENTIENT use on live edge furniture?
SENTIENT offers several finish options for live edge pieces. Hardwax oil is the most common, providing a natural look that lets the wood breathe and develop character over time. It’s food-safe once cured. We also offer water-based finishes for eco-friendly durability, lacquer for a more polished appearance, and wax finishes for enhanced natural beauty. Each finish affects color, sheen, and maintenance requirements differently. Finishes can also substantially change the slab’s visual tone to match or contrast your interior. Our design team will recommend the right finish based on your intended use and aesthetic preferences.
How do I care for a live edge table?
Live edge tables require the same basic care as any solid wood furniture. Wipe surfaces with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive sponges. For oil-finished pieces, reapply hardwax oil once or twice a year depending on use. Maintain indoor humidity between 40 and 60 percent to prevent the wood from drying or swelling. Avoid placing the table near heating vents or in direct sunlight, which can cause uneven drying and fading. Use coasters and table pads to prevent water rings and scratches. Read our full care guide.
Can SENTIENT build live edge furniture beyond dining tables?
Yes. SENTIENT builds live edge coffee tables, desks, conference tables, headboards, benches, shelving, and custom millwork. Our coffee tables are built from smaller slabs and offcuts selected for exceptional grain and figure. The Citadelle Bed features a solid slab headboard with optional leather upholstery and integrated side tables. For commercial projects, we’ve built live edge conference tables, reception desks, and bar tops. If it can be built from a slab, we can design and craft it. Tell us what you have in mind.
