Metal Finishes
SENTIENT’s in-house metal shop fabricates custom bases, legs, frames, and accent details in steel, brass, and specialty finishes. Every metal element is designed and built alongside the wood components in our Brooklyn workshop. For detailed profiles of each metal finish, visit our metal finishes guide.

What metal finishes does SENTIENT offer?
SENTIENT offers a full range of metal finishes fabricated in our Brooklyn metal shop. Steel options include bare steel, blackened steel, weathered steel, and polished steel. Brass finishes include bare brass, brushed brass, and polished brass. We also offer decorative gold leaf, silver leaf, and copper leaf gilding for accent details. Every finish is applied in-house, giving us full control over consistency and quality. Browse all metal finishes.
What is blackened steel and how is it made?
Blackened steel is one of SENTIENT’s most requested metal finishes. It is created through a chemical oxidation process that converts the surface oxide layer, producing a dark charcoal-to-black finish with subtle warm undertones. The result is more refined than raw steel and more organic than powder coat. After blackening, the surface is sealed with wax or clear coat for protection. Blackened steel pairs especially well with walnut and white oak, creating a refined industrial aesthetic.
What is the difference between the brass finish options?
SENTIENT offers three brass finishes, each with a distinct character. Bare brass is unlacquered and develops a natural patina over time, darkening and gaining character with age and touch. Brushed brass has a satin directional texture that softens reflections and adds warmth without the high shine of a polished surface. Polished brass is buffed to a mirror-bright gold finish and protected with lacquer to maintain its shine. The right choice depends on whether you want a living, evolving surface or a consistent, maintained appearance.
Does SENTIENT fabricate metal bases in-house?
Yes. SENTIENT has a dedicated metal shop inside our 25,000 square foot Brooklyn workshop at 276 Greenpoint Avenue. We design, cut, weld, grind, and finish all metal bases, legs, frames, and accent details in-house. This means the metal and wood components are built under the same roof by the same team, ensuring precise fit, consistent quality, and coordinated timelines. We fabricate custom bases in steel, brass, and bronze, in any configuration from simple trestle frames to sculptural one-of-a-kind forms. See all metal finish options.
How do metal finishes age and develop patina over time?
Different metals age differently. Bare brass develops a warm, darkening patina through oxidation and contact with skin oils. Many clients prefer this natural evolution. Weathered steel develops an intentional rust patina that stabilizes into a self-protecting oxide layer. Sealed finishes like blackened steel and polished brass are protected to slow or prevent patina development. If you want a living surface that changes over time, bare brass and weathered steel are the right direction. If you want consistency, sealed finishes maintain their original appearance with simple care.
How do I maintain and care for metal bases and hardware?
For sealed metal finishes (blackened steel, polished brass, polished steel), wipe with a soft, dry cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. The protective seal or lacquer prevents oxidation and keeps the surface consistent. For bare brass and bare steel, a light application of furniture wax provides additional protection if desired. Weathered steel should be wiped gently to avoid breaking through the sealer. Avoid prolonged water contact on any metal surface. If high-touch areas begin to show wear, a professional renewal application can restore the original finish. See our full care guide.
Can I mix metal finishes and wood species on one piece?
Yes, and mixed-material compositions are one of SENTIENT’s strengths. Common pairings include blackened steel bases with walnut tops, brushed brass legs with white oak surfaces, and polished steel with maple for a contemporary look. Our design team considers how the wood grain, tone, and finish interact with the metal texture and color. During the design phase, we present material combinations in 3D renderings so you can see how they work together before production begins.
What decorative leaf finishes are available?
SENTIENT offers gold leaf, silver leaf, and copper leaf gilding for decorative accents and statement details. Leaf finishes are applied by hand using traditional gilding techniques: the surface is prepared with adhesive sizing, then thin sheets of metal leaf are carefully laid and burnished into place. Gold leaf delivers a warm, rich metallic surface. Silver leaf provides a cool, contemporary tone. Copper leaf offers a warm reddish-gold that can develop natural patina over time if left unsealed. These finishes are typically used for accent elements rather than full surfaces.
What metal options work best for outdoor furniture?
For outdoor furniture, SENTIENT typically uses powder-coated steel or marine-grade stainless steel for maximum weather resistance. Standard bare steel will rust without proper sealing, though weathered steel (Cor-Ten type) is specifically designed to develop a protective oxide layer outdoors. Brass can be used outdoors but will patina significantly without maintenance. For outdoor teak and ipe furniture, we engineer the metal base and joinery to handle seasonal expansion and contraction. Our team will recommend the right metal system for your specific outdoor conditions.
Can SENTIENT match a specific metal finish from a reference?
Yes. SENTIENT’s metal shop can match metal finishes from reference samples, photographs, or existing hardware. Bring us a sample of the blackened steel, patinated brass, or specialty finish you want to match, and we will develop a finish protocol to replicate it. For exact color and texture matching, we produce sample pieces for approval before proceeding with the full fabrication. This is especially useful for hospitality and commercial projects where the metal finish needs to coordinate with existing architectural elements or brand standards.
