Metamorph Chair

Nersi Nasseri designed the Metamorph as a dining chair that holds a line from every angle. The frame is solid wood, usually black walnut, cut to a small number of flat planes that meet at clean angles rather than curves. Nothing is applied to it and nothing is hidden inside it.

A chair is the hardest piece of furniture to simplify. It carries a person’s full weight through four thin members and still has to look light. The Metamorph solves that in the joinery instead of the mass. The sections stay slim, the joints do the work, and the upholstered seat is the only soft element on the piece.

Around a table, the effect is that the chairs do not crowd the room. Pulled away from it, each one still reads as a designed object rather than seating.
