Velvet

Velvet adds depth, directional sheen, and a rich tactile finish that can read both residential and hospitality when specified correctly. SENTIENT uses performance velvet and mohair blends where softness and visual richness are required without sacrificing contract-level durability. Because velvet is a pile construction, success depends on understanding how light, traffic, and cleaning methods interact with nap direction over time.

Composition

Velvet constructions range from cotton-rich and polyester performance blends to mohair velvets for premium contract programs. Fiber type, pile height, pile density, and backing structure determine abrasion behavior, pressure marking, and recovery after use. Higher-end contract velvets often use tighter constructions and finishing processes that improve durability while preserving a refined hand.

Characteristics

Velvet produces directional light play and tonal shading that create visual depth on curved and tailored upholstery forms. Pile movement, tracking, and minor pressure marks are normal material behavior rather than defects. Better constructions provide stronger resilience, reduced matting, and more stable appearance retention in frequent-use hospitality and commercial environments.

Best Use Cases

Best for banquettes, lounge chairs, headboards, and statement upholstery where color depth and tactile character are design priorities. In hospitality projects, contract-rated velvet is recommended for guest-facing seating that must balance premium appearance with realistic maintenance cycles. For very high-contact zones, pair velvet with robust seam and cushioning strategies to maintain tailored appearance over long service intervals.

Performance Considerations

Review abrasion test method and rating, pile crush behavior, cleanability chemistry, and seam compatibility with the selected upholstery pattern. Mohair-rich and high-density contract velvets generally outperform decorative-only products in heavy-use seating applications. Performance should be validated with mockups where possible, since visual shading tolerance varies by project and lighting conditions.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Vacuum gently with an upholstery attachment, brush in pile direction as needed, and spot clean according to cleaning code and manufacturer guidance. Controlled steam can help revive pile on suitable constructions, but heat and moisture should be tested first in concealed areas. Avoid aggressive scrubbing or harsh solvents, which can permanently distort nap and flatten the surface texture.
