Polished Steel

Polished Steel metal finish showing surface texture and color

Polished steel is ground and buffed through progressive stages to achieve a mirror-reflective surface. It reads clean, contemporary, and precise. SENTIENT polishes steel in-house at our Brooklyn metal shop for bases, accents, and hardware where a bright modern metallic finish is the design goal.

Appearance

Polished steel has a highly reflective mirror finish with no visible grain or surface texture. The surface behaves almost like liquid metal, picking up and reflecting the colors and forms of its surroundings. It reads bright, cool, and distinctly contemporary. The tradeoff for that reflectivity is visibility: fingerprints, dust, and water spots show readily on the mirror surface, so placement and context matter.

Characteristics

Achieving a true mirror finish on steel requires careful surface preparation and multiple polishing stages, progressing from coarse to fine abrasives until the surface roughness drops below what the eye can detect. The reflective surface accentuates any imperfection, so the metalwork has to be precise from the start. Once polished, the steel is sealed with a clear coat to prevent oxidation and fingerprint etching. The chromium content in the alloy also helps resist corrosion, though the clear coat does the heavy lifting for long-term protection.

Common Applications

Polished steel works well for modern table bases, accent legs, hardware, and trim details where the design calls for a crisp metallic presence. It pairs naturally with maple and other light-toned woods for a contemporary look, and it creates a striking contrast against darker species. The mirror surface catches and redirects light, which makes it effective in spaces where brightness and visual openness matter.

Care and Maintenance

Wipe polished steel regularly with a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints and dust before they accumulate. For stubborn marks, use a gentle stainless steel cleaner or a solution of warm water with mild soap, then dry immediately to prevent water spots. Avoid abrasive pads, paper towels, and harsh chemical cleaners, all of which can scratch or dull the mirror surface. If the clear coat begins to wear, have it reapplied to prevent oxidation from developing underneath.
