SENTIENT Incubator Program for Emerging Designers

SENTIENT in collaboration with ICFF and WantedDesign proudly introduces the Incubator for Emerging Designers, a cutting-edge program aimed at fostering the next generation of furniture design talents. This unique initiative offers an unparalleled opportunity for up-and-coming designers to immerse themselves in operational and creative facets of the leading design firm. Participants will have the chance to co-create with a seasoned team in product design development, benefit from manufacturing support, and possibly partner in launching and promoting their product at ICFF.

Program Details

  • Program length: Three months
  • Program Size: One participant per edition
  • Start dates:
    • Edition 1: July 1, 2024
    • Edition 2: Oct 1, 2024
    • Edition 3: January 1, 2025
    • Edition 4: April 1, 2025
  • Application Deadlines: Two weeks before each edition’s start date
  • Location: In-person at SENTIENT’s Brooklyn studio and workshop

 

Eligibility & Requirements

  • The program is open to students and recent graduates (within three years) from fields related to design, architecture, art, or other relevant fields , as well as individuals with at least three years of experience in the design, art, or furniture industry, including hands-on work in design processes, crafting, or creative projects.
  • All applicants are required to be able to work in person with SENTIENT at their Brooklyn studio and workshop.
  • Submission of a design portfolio.
  • Submission of an essay or a proposal about a furniture design the applicant is interested in developing during the program.
  • All submitted essay design and ideas must be the original work of the applicant.
  • Only one submission may be entered per applicant, per quarter. Duplicate entries will be disqualified.

Proposal/Essay Guidelines

For your application to the program, please submit an essay or proposal detailing your furniture design idea. Include photos, sketches or rendering to illustrate your concept, describe the inspiration behind your design, and explain its uniqueness. Clearly outline your goals for the program, including the skills you hope to acquire, the mentorship you seek, and how you plan to utilize the program’s resources to develop your prototype and prepare it for market launch. Ensure your proposal is concise, well-organized, and showcases your creativity and readiness for the program.

What are the selection criteria for applicants?

Selection is based on the creativity and feasibility of the proposed design idea, the quality of the portfolio, and the applicant’s potential to benefit from the program.

Can I submit multiple applications?

Only one submission may be entered per applicant, per quarter. Duplicate entries will be disqualified.

How long is the program, and when are the start dates?

Each edition runs for 3 months.

Can international students apply?

International students can apply if they are able to work in person at the Brooklyn location and meet the other eligibility requirements.

What expenses are participants responsible for?

While the program provides all necessary resources for prototyping and mentorship at no cost, participants are expected to manage and cover their own living and personal expenses throughout the duration of the program.
