How does the custom furniture ordering process work at SENTIENT?
SENTIENT’s custom furniture process follows seven clear steps: consultation, concept development, 3D rendering, design refinement, production, hand finishing, and white-glove delivery. It starts with a conversation about your space, your vision, and your practical needs. From there, our design team creates initial sketches and detailed computer renderings so you can see exactly what you’re getting before production begins. You’re involved at every stage. How long does a custom furniture project take from start to finish?
SENTIENT custom furniture projects typically take 6 to 8 weeks from design approval to delivery. More complex projects, such as large-scale hospitality orders or pieces requiring specialty materials, may take 10 to 14 weeks. We provide a specific timeline during your initial consultation and keep you updated throughout production. Rush timelines are sometimes possible depending on workshop capacity.
What happens during the initial design consultation?
During a SENTIENT consultation, we discuss your space, intended use, style preferences, and budget range. If you have sketches, mood boards, or reference images, bring them along. Our design team will recommend materials, dimensions, and construction approaches based on your needs. Consultations happen in person at our Brooklyn studio, by phone, or by video call. There’s no charge for the initial conversation.
Do I need to visit the Brooklyn workshop to order?
No. SENTIENT works with clients across the country and internationally without requiring a studio visit. We handle consultations by phone or video, share 3D renderings digitally, and ship finished pieces nationwide with white-glove delivery. That said, visiting our Brooklyn workshop is worth it if you can. Seeing materials in person and watching furniture being made helps you understand the process and the quality.
Can I make changes to my order after production has started?
SENTIENT can accommodate minor adjustments early in the production process, such as slight dimension changes or finish modifications. Once fabrication is underway, major changes become more difficult and may affect timeline and cost. This is why we invest significant time in the design and approval phase. We don’t start cutting wood until you’ve signed off on the final rendering.
Is a deposit required for custom furniture orders?
Yes. SENTIENT requires a deposit to begin production on custom furniture. The deposit secures your place in our production schedule and covers material procurement. The remaining balance is due before delivery. Specific payment terms depend on project scope, and we’ll outline everything clearly before you commit. Reach out for details on your project.
What is the approval process before production begins?
Before SENTIENT begins production, you review and approve a detailed 3D rendering that shows your piece from multiple angles, including material, dimensions, and finish. For projects involving specific slabs, we share photos of the actual wood. Once you approve the design and confirm payment terms, we schedule your project in the workshop. Nothing gets built until you’re confident in the design.
Does SENTIENT provide 3D renderings or samples before I commit?
Yes. SENTIENT creates detailed 3D computer renderings for every custom project, showing the finished piece from multiple perspectives. These renderings include accurate material textures, proportions, and finish details. For larger projects, we can provide material samples and, in some cases, physical prototypes. The goal is to eliminate guesswork before production begins. Learn more about our design process.
Can I order custom furniture remotely or from out of state?
Absolutely. SENTIENT regularly works with clients across the United States and internationally. Our process is built to work remotely: consultations happen by phone or video, renderings are shared digitally, and finished furniture ships with white-glove delivery and professional installation. Many of our long-distance clients have never visited Brooklyn and receive furniture that exceeds their expectations.
What should I have ready before my first consultation?
Before your SENTIENT consultation, it helps to know the approximate dimensions of your space, how the furniture will be used, and any style direction you have in mind. Photos of the room, floor plans, or reference images are useful. If you’re working with an interior designer or architect, we’re happy to collaborate directly with your design team through our trade program. No preparation is required, but these details help us move faster.
