Luxor Credenza

Live-edge slabs mounted outside the cabinet, carrying it clear of the floor

Live-edge slab supports mounted outside the casing, so the cabinet appears to sit inside the wood rather than on it. Designed by Nersi Nasseri, 2021.

SENTIENT Luxor Credenza

A credenza that uses live edge supports attached onto the outside of casing.

Nearly every credenza on the market hides its structure. The Luxor puts its structure on the outside instead. Two live-edge slabs are mounted to the outer faces of the cabinet and run past it top and bottom. The box then appears to be held between them rather than standing on legs. From the front you read a clean rectangle; from either end you read the full natural edge, floor to top.

Nasseri drew it in 2021 after a night walk through Egyptian ruins. That is where the name comes from, and why the proportions are deliberately architectural. The cabinet is the lintel and the slabs are the piers.

Structure and hardware

Every slab is hand-selected, because it has to be strong enough to act as a support and interesting enough to hold the eye. The body is finished flat and quiet so the wood stays the subject. Doors run on soft-close hardware, and the pulls are leather, chosen so the one part you touch every day is warm rather than cold.

Customization Options

Dimensions, species, and finish are all open to change. A dark walnut body reads heavy and closed; a bleached or white oak body reads light and lets the slab edges carry the contrast. Because every slab is different, no two Luxor credenzas come out the same, and we confirm the final height once the supports are chosen.

One of a kind series of credenzas

The Luxor is one of a run of live edge credenzas built on the same principle. A plain cabinet does the storage, and a slab does the talking. An iteration of the Luxor is on view at SENTIENT Gallery in Brooklyn, built in spalted maple with Corian pulls. It is worth seeing in person to understand how the supports carry the body.
