Caracola Sofa

Where the shape comes from

Anastasios Senteris designed the Caracola around two Art Deco habits: bold geometry up top and repeated vertical line below. The backrest is scalloped, so the top edge moves in a series of arcs rather than a straight run. Underneath it, the upholstery is channeled in narrow vertical bands from the seat to the crown.

Those two moves work against each other on purpose. The scallop is soft and horizontal, the channeling is rigid and vertical, and the sofa reads as neither one alone. The name follows the same logic: caracola is Spanish for a spiral shell, which is what the scalloped back traces from above.

Hand channeling the back is slow, exacting work. Each band is stitched and stuffed individually, and the spacing has to stay even across the whole back or the eye catches it immediately. That is the part of this sofa that takes the time.

Upholstery and finish

Velvet is the obvious choice here, because the pile shifts tone along each channel and makes the vertical banding read from across a room. Textured weaves flatten that effect for something quieter, and leather holds the channel edges sharpest of the three. Standard options are Divina by Maharam and Robert Allen Orvis, with custom upholstery and COM available on request. Legs are turned in walnut, oak, ash, cherry, or maple.
