Brushed Brass
Brushed brass has a directional satin texture created by finishing the surface with abrasive belts or pads. It softens the reflectivity of polished brass into a warm, muted glow that reads contemporary and restrained. SENTIENT applies brushed finishes in our in-house Brooklyn metal shop, where we control the direction, depth, and consistency of the texture on every piece.
Appearance
Brushed brass presents a warm gold tone with a soft, directional satin texture across the surface. Fine parallel lines from the abrasive process catch and diffuse light rather than reflecting it sharply, creating a glow instead of a glare. The finish is less reflective than polished brass and more refined than bare brass, sitting in a middle ground that works across a wide range of interior styles. The brushing gives the metal a tactile quality you can feel under your fingers.
Characteristics
The directional texture on brushed brass serves a practical purpose beyond aesthetics: it hides fingerprints, water spots, and minor scratches far better than a polished surface. This makes it a more forgiving choice for high-use furniture and hardware. Brushed brass is typically sealed with a lacquer or clear coat to preserve the satin finish and slow the natural patina that brass develops over time. Without that sealer, the surface gradually warms and darkens as the brass oxidizes, though the directional texture remains visible through the aging process.
Common Applications
Brushed brass is a popular choice for table bases, credenza legs, cabinet pulls, accent details, and desk hardware. Its understated warmth makes it versatile enough for both residential interiors and hospitality projects, where it adds metallic warmth without the formality of a polished finish. The satin texture pairs well with both light and dark wood species, and it holds its own next to stone, leather, and upholstery fabrics.
Care and Maintenance
Wipe brushed brass with a soft cloth, moving in the direction of the brush lines rather than across them. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads that could cut across the directional texture and create visible cross-marks. If the piece is sealed with lacquer, maintain the clear coat to preserve the consistent satin tone. Clean up spills promptly, and use coasters under glasses to prevent ring marks from moisture or acidic drinks sitting on the surface.
