Bare Steel

Bare Steel metal finish showing surface texture and color

Bare steel is raw, uncoated steel with an honest industrial character straight from the mill. SENTIENT’s in-house metal shop fabricates custom steel bases, legs, frames, and accent details at our Brooklyn workshop. For indoor furniture, we typically apply a clear coat to preserve the raw look while preventing rust transfer to surfaces and hands.

Appearance

Bare steel presents a matte gray surface with natural variation across the material. Mill marks, weld lines, and subtle surface texture give each piece its own identity. The tone shifts depending on how the steel was rolled and processed, ranging from cool blue-gray to warmer silver tones. Left untreated, the surface darkens over time and develops orange-brown oxidation as iron reacts with moisture and oxygen in the air.

Characteristics

Steel is strong, rigid, and heavy, which makes it an ideal structural material for furniture bases and frames. It accepts welding, cutting, bending, and forming, so our metal shop can fabricate nearly any shape or profile. The tradeoff is reactivity: bare steel oxidizes when exposed to moisture and oxygen, forming rust on unprotected surfaces. For indoor furniture, a clear penetrating sealer or urethane coat locks in the raw appearance and prevents oxide transfer. Without that protective layer, the steel continues to change and eventually corrodes.

Common Applications

Bare steel works well for table bases, chair frames, shelf brackets, structural supports, and accent details where an industrial aesthetic fits the design. Our metal shop builds custom steel elements for dining tables, conference tables, and millwork projects. The material pairs naturally with warm-toned woods like walnut and oak, where the cool gray of steel creates a grounding contrast.

Care and Maintenance

For sealed bare steel, dust regularly and wipe down with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth. Avoid prolonged water contact, and clean up spills promptly to protect the clear coat. If the sealer wears through in high-touch areas, reapply it to prevent oxidation from starting underneath. Unsealed bare steel develops rust naturally, so keep it in dry environments if you want to slow that process.
