Live Edge Collection
Live Edge Furniture
Live edge is where SENTIENT began and where our design philosophy is most visible. Every piece follows the natural contour of the slab, so no two tables, beds, or credenzas are alike. We don’t impose a shape. We work with what the wood offers.
The grain, the curves, the knots and imperfections — these define the design. Our live edge dining tables and coffee tables are built around slabs of American black walnut, spalted maple, cherry, and oak, sourced from Pennsylvania mills and dried in our Brooklyn workshop. Each piece carries our brass signature: a mark of originality and the human craft behind it.
From Slab to Studio
We source slabs from family-owned mills in Pennsylvania, less than 500 miles from our Brooklyn workshop. Each slab is air-dried for up to 18 months, then kiln-dried for a final three months before it’s ready to work. This slow, deliberate process ensures the wood is stable and will perform for generations.
Our primary species are American black walnut, white oak, hard maple, cherry, and spalted maple. We also work with ash, teak, and ipe for outdoor projects. For clients seeking LEED or US Green Building Certification, our local sourcing and sustainable practices meet the requirements.
American Black Walnut
Walnut is our most-used species for live edge work. The dark chocolate heartwood, the cream sapwood ring at the edge, the dramatic grain patterns — these are what make each piece a conversation starter. We source walnut slabs with exceptional figure and stable structure, then design around what the wood reveals.
Why Live Edge
Live edge furniture makes a statement. The natural contour of the slab creates a form that can’t be mass-produced or faked. Every curve, knot, and grain pattern is genuinely one-of-a-kind. That’s what draws people to it, and that’s what keeps it relevant regardless of design trends.
Our live edge pieces work in private homes, hotel lobbies, corporate boardrooms, and restaurants. The material is timeless. The design is original. And because every piece is built in solid wood by hand, it’s furniture that will last for generations. For care tips, see our live edge maintenance guide.

Sentient Live Edge Dining Table
Our live edge dining tables range from intimate four-person tables to 16-foot communal designs for restaurants and hotels. Each one is built around a single slab or book-matched pair, with custom dimensions, base styles, and finishes. The natural contour of the wood defines the shape. No two are the same.
Colorado Live Edge Dining Table
The Colorado table pairs two live-edge spalted maple slabs with a glass center, creating a river-like effect similar to our epoxy river tables. The minimalist form lets the wood’s natural veining and irregularities take center stage. It works in residential dining rooms and corporate boardrooms alike.
Friends Bookcase Concept
The Friends Bookcase is a sculptural concept piece, designed to blur the line between furniture and art. Built in maple with a driftwood finish and steel supports, the form is inspired by the human body in motion. We made two versions, one male and one female, each with a distinct silhouette.
Luxor Live Edge Credenza
The Luxor Credenza is where live edge meets modernist geometry. A blackened cabinet floats between two walnut slabs, the clean lines contrasting with the organic edge. It’s one of our most distinctive designs, and it works equally well as a media console, sideboard, or statement piece.
Time When Live Edge Console
The Time When Console takes the Luxor’s geometric language and extends it. Angular blackened steel meets walnut sides that flow down like waterfalls, softening the form. The design grew out of the Luxor Credenza, evolving the same tension between hard angles and organic wood.
Niagara Dresser with Live Edge Handles
The Niagara Dresser inverts the usual live edge approach: instead of a wood body with metal accents, it’s a white solid-surface cabinet with live edge walnut drawer pulls. The sculpted handles are the focal point, set against the minimal white form. The cabinet material is commercial-grade solid surface, extremely durable and stable.
Locust Wood Chair
The Locust Chair is cut from the bias of each slab, so the natural edge of the locust wood becomes the chair’s defining shape. No two are alike. The curved seat follows the grain, and the legs extend the sculptural form into three dimensions. It’s one of the most direct expressions of our design philosophy: let the wood dictate the shape.
Zora Live Edge Coffee Table
The Zora Coffee Table is bias-cut from a single slab, so the grain pattern flows across the entire surface. Each piece is genuinely one-of-a-kind. The slanted base lifts the slab at an angle, turning a functional coffee table into a sculptural object.
SENTIENT Live Edge Bed
Our live edge beds are built around a solid slab headboard, with optional leather upholstery, integrated side tables, and built-in storage. The Citadelle Bed is the signature design, but every bed is made to order with custom dimensions and features.
SENTIENT Live Edge Coffee Table
Our coffee tables are built from smaller slabs and offcuts, each one selected for its grain and figure. Available in walnut, oak, maple, and cherry. We design around what the wood reveals, not the other way around. For design inspiration, see our live edge design guide.
Foothills Live Edge Console
The Foothills Console pairs a sculptural live edge slab base with a glass top. The contrast between the organic wood form and the clean glass surface creates tension that works in both modern and traditional interiors.
Live Edge Dining Table
A live edge dining table anchors the room. We build them for private residences, restaurants and hotels, and corporate boardrooms. Each table is finished by hand and built to perform under daily use for decades.
